Why Kansas City families need REST.

“Until I did a stint of trauma therapy it (caregiving) had a huge effect on my mental health, causing anxiety, depression, and brain fog. The stress has impacted my immune system and ability to sleep. I have had to give up my career entirely to manage my daughter's condition since it is a full-time job in and of itself. ”

— Lenexa, KS parent

Since (my child’s) birth it’s been difficult for me to work a typical/full time job. I feel isolated from friends/family who done have a kid with special/medical needs. I’m exhausted all the time and definitely could benefit from more mental health support/therapy for me.
— Olathe, KS parent

“Having to depend on other people to help is so stressful. Having to cancel or reschedule personal or medical appointments because I don’t have a second person to go with me makes me feel like I never should plan fun things, only needed things. ”

— Merriam, KS parent

My mental health struggles as I struggle with ptsd from my son’s medical trauma as well as having a lot of anxiety around his health and future. I also am struggling with caregiver burnout and just feeling overwhelmed all the time. My physical health has been impacted by not having adequate time to attend to my own medical care and doctors appointments and also struggling to find time to workout regularly and prepare healthy food for myself. I wrk as my son’s paid caregiver but I really don’t have the option to return to my previous career because I would have to miss too much work for his appointments and his frequent illnesses.”

Lawrence, KS parent

I cant work. I am home all day everyday with my son. I feel I don’t have time to workout and I know I should be drinking more water, but I’m always rushing from one thing to the next. I have no down time. I definitely have caregiver burnout, but I don’t know what else to do so I just keep going.
— Blue Springs, MO parent
My mental health suffers, 90% of my time is consumed with the child’s needs. I’m with him 100% of the time, I feel like I’m losing myself often. I have gained weight and neglected my physical health to prioritize his.

 FAQs

  • RESTkc has submitted its 501(c)(3) application and is currently awaiting IRS approval. If our status is approved, it will be retroactive to our application date, meaning donations made after that date will be tax-deductible. We’ll notify all donors as soon as our status is confirmed. • Unless otherwise specified, your gift is considered an unrestricted donation, allowing us to apply funds where they are most needed—whether that’s supporting caregivers directly, training volunteers, or covering essential operational costs.

  • Yes—every service we offer is completely free to the families we support. Caregivers of medically complex children already carry so much—we’re here to lighten the load, not add to it. That’s why we rely on donors like you to help us show up, consistently and compassionately, where the need is greatest.

  • RESTkc serves families of children with chronic medical conditions, disabilities, or complex care needs in the Kansas City area. This includes children who require frequent medical appointments, ongoing therapies, assistive technology, or round-the-clock caregiving. We focus on families who are often navigating multiple systems—healthcare, education, insurance—and who may be at higher risk for caregiver burnout. Whether a child’s needs are visible or not, we believe every caregiver deserves support, rest, and relief.
